The short history of New York Salsa
Cuba was the island where most of the latin rythms were born and spread all around the world but mostly into the nearby New York. In the 1960’s, there was the need for a type of music which would represent the cultural values and the identity of the latinos and bring together the Latin population living in New York. A new music style was born from a mixture of Cuban rythms (son, son montuno, mambo, guagauanco) and American jazz (many trumpets and trombones). The lyrics relate to the struggles and problems of the everday people and express the joy and sorrow of the Latin community the „Spanish Harlem” of New York ("EL BARRIO"). SALSA for the Latinos in New York was much more than just music and dance – it was a style of living and philosophy. New York salsa style emphasizes efficiency of movement, elegance and body isolations. In New York City this style is danced strictly On2, although dancers around the world often integrate elements and repertoire from New York into their dancing On1.
